This simplest type of Morse key is termed a "straight key" and works by closing a contact when it is pressed and opening it when it is released.

The term "straight key" is sometimes used to include other types of keys such as semi-automatic (bug) and sideswiper (cootie) keys, but these are better described as "mechanical keys".
